You can prepare relative documents and request for refund of medical expenses from any regional division or liaison office of the NHI (National Health Insurance) Administration, if you meet any of the following conditions, and refund payment will be given back to you after final review or case study:
1. In case of emergency situations wherein no time to go to the NHI contracted clinics or hospitals, as you need immediate treatments at non-NHI contracted medical institutions; or encountering emergency sickness, injuries or childbirth when travelling abroad, and no choice but to go to nearby clinics or hospitals
2. Taken treatments at NHI contracted medical institutions during a period wherein insurance is temporarily suspended, or taken treatments abroad due to urgent sickness/injuries but you have now settled and paid the health insurance fees.
3. Taken treatments at NHI contracted medical institutions and you have paid full expense but reasons not attributed to you (for example: you were hospitalized due to major illness but only determined as catastrophic illness after being discharged), thus you did not file for refund within required time limit (which is within 10 working days after the day of treatment), or did not submit your NHI Card and identification documents before discharge from the hospital.
4. The whole year expense of hospitalization exceeds the legal co-payment limit which is within 30 days for acute wards, and within 180 days for chronic wards.
The above information is for reference only, and process must be guided by the competent authority.
